Black Lives Matter
The ODU Democrats wholeheartedly support the Black Lives Matter movement. We believe that Black Lives are not currently valued by our society's institutions and we will push for change to create a society where Black lives matter and are celebrated. To this end we also work on issues affecting communities of color- police brutality, mass incarceration and systemic racism, redlining, and the school-to-prison pipeline.
Climate Change
Norfolk is ground zero for Climate Change and the effects and havoc it is wreaking across the globe. As a coastal city, we have all watched as every year the tide comes in a little farther, and the flooding that used to occur every so-often now occurs every time it rains in Norfolk. ODU and Norfolk need a plan to adapt to Climate Change and our world needs a plan to fight Climate Change, and ODU Democrats will be fighting for these goals every step of the way.
Healthcare
The ODU Democrats are committed to the goal of universal health care. We support the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, as a tremendous first step in that direction. The Affordable Care Act has insured millions of people, and made health insurance more accessible to young people, along with preventative care services, and access to contraception.
The ODU Democrats will fight against any attempts to roll back the progress made under the ACA, and will continue to fight for the improvements necessary to make health care truly universal and affordable.
Environment
Living in Norfolk, the ODU Democrats know all too well the effects of Climate Change. The ODU Democrats are committed to action on Climate Change, to reduce emissions and halt sea-level rise here in Hampton Roads. We will defend President Obama's progress on Climate, such as the Clean Power Plan and the Paris Climate Agreement.
The ODU Democrats advocate for increased development of alternate and renewable energies, and against fossil fuels and offshore drilling in Virginia.
Debt-Free College
The ODU Democrats are committed to making college affordable and debt-free for all who aspire towards higher education. The cost of four year university has exploded over the past three decades, pricing out the working and middle classes. We fight for progressive candidates and legislation to achieve the goal of all students being able to attend university without taking on any student debt.
